Description by Andreas Martin-Löf Arkitekter

In 1917, famend restauranteur Sten Hellberg constructed a Chinese language-type tower excessive above Torsbyfjärden with a view overlooking the delivery lane in the direction of Stockholm. The six hectare plot has been within the present house owners’ household because the Nineteen Fifties. Within the Nineteen Sixties a single-storey, interval-fashion addition to the tower containing new front room, kitchen, bed room and toilet areas was added.

The brand new constructing is made up of architectural parts that relate each to the unique tower and the Nineteen Sixties extension. Collectively they create an ensemble of buildings from three totally different eras. The brand new constructing is positioned on a steep hillside. When seen from the primary home above, the brand new quantity seems like a small outbuilding inserted between two pine timber. Nevertheless, the sloping website permits for a two-storey home to be positioned with out competing with the unique home for dominance. The decrease flooring consists of an entrance corridor, bed room, rest room and a sauna which is tucked right into a crevice within the stone hillside. A staircase results in a single, giant room on the higher flooring which accommodates kitchen, eating and dwelling areas.

The home is constructed in metal, timber and glass and is positioned on a concrete plinth. The faces of the plinth are angled by 5 levels, which is harking back to conventional pagoda foundations and a delicate reference to Sten Hellberg’s chinese language-type tower. The customized-made glazing is hooked up on to the construction – with detailing tailored from the Nineteen Sixties extension, whereas the attribute projecting roof is borrowed from the prevailing tower. A sloping forged in-situ retaining wall creates an infinity swimming pool to the west and morning terrace to the east which visually minimize by way of the decrease storey. Within the night the pines are reworked into bonsai timber that mirror in the dead of night water of the pool.
