This contemporary house can rightfully be said to “have everything” — thanks to an elegant, livable design by Bates Masi Architects. That impression of “lots happening at once” is deliberate: as the architects say, “The clients, one of whom is the owner of a public relations company, requested that multiple activities could take place throughout the house without interruption; a dinner party could take place while simultaneously entertaining a group of children, or guests could come and go without disturbing the rest of the family.” Indeed, take a look at the house from the back yard — with its outdoor entertaining area and lavish pool — and you’ll see that you not only “have everything” at your fingertips, but within easy visible range, too.
The house is a series of boxes walled by glass for friendly transparency — with mahogany boards on floors and walls for privacy. Travertine is both flooring for the terraces and cladding on portions of the “boxes,” each of which has independent controls: audio, video, and climate. Between the “boxes” are gardens and patios, bringing light and “green” to the proceedings. Perhaps the most striking detail here is the fireplace; it houses a coat closet and HVAC equipment behind a beautiful polished bronze façade. (A similar construction method was employed for the master bedroom headboard…with the substitution of leather strips for bronze!) With carefully planned transparency and space enough for a crowd, this home enables its owners to keep up with a busy lifestyle — and “get away from it all” at the same time.
