This contemporary redo — named “Z” — in Bucharest, Romania, was designed by Studio 1408. As the designers explain: “The Z apartment is located in a central urban neighborhood of Bucharest and spreads over 160 square meters. It is a two-story penthouse apartment that has been almost completely refurbished…the challenge of this project was to compose an apartment defined by an elegant and serious style, which was the requirement of the customer, without sacrificing the comfortable and cozy feeling every great home should have.” You’ll see both an elegant sophistication and a “comfy” ambience here: while the furnishings are undeniably modern, the surroundings bespeak a relaxed approach that fits a multitude of occasions. Wood floors serve as a unifying feature throughout, with soothing neutrals as a palette upon which to build.
“In order to obtain these effects,” the designers continue, “our team decided to use glossy surfaces with sober colors, like the glossy beige living room furniture and the dark grey wallpaper and the shiny black kitchen cabinets to contrast with the pronounced texture of the wooden surfaces, creating a very modern display.” The kitchen, indeed, is a wonder, with plenty of work space; mere steps separate the dining area from the living room, and yet they’re distinctly different moods and “rooms,” not easy to do in an open floor plan. The upper floor affords great views of the city and serves as a “social hub” for the family. The lower floor, by contrast, contains private living spaces: two bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom and storage space, with a third bedroom presently serving as a home office. It’s a sophisticated yet homey space; well-appointed but comfortable, in a breath of fresh air from Studio 1408.
